Our dieticians are qualified to help you create a healthy eating plan that will form the perfect middle ground between managing diabetes and what can also work for YOU.

Your choice of diet could influence your long-term health more than any other decision you might take.

This is even truer for people who are living with diabetes, for whom diet can - at its best - determine the quality of life and at its worst - can mean the difference between life and death.

This is why we at Diabetes West believe that you deserve nothing less than the option to consult with one of our professional dieticians, who are proven experts in diet and nutrition.

The good news is that we don’t really want you to go on a diet. We just want you to eat healthy. And this doesn’t necessarily mean that you will, suddenly, be deprived, eat less, or less frequently. You just have to learn to eat right.

Diabetes healthy eating basics.

When helping you to plan how to eat healthily, our dieticians will consider the four critical components in food that can affect your blood sugar: carbohydrates, fibre, protein and fat.

Carbohydrates for example raise blood sugar faster and have the greatest effect on blood glucose compared to foods that contain proteins or fats. Fibre, protein, and fat can reduce a spike in blood sugar levels after a meal.

Aiming for a healthy balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fat in your meals is the preferred way of eating that has also shown to be more sustainable over the long term.

The right eating plan for you.

The healthy eating basics above are good guidelines, but two people with diabetes may still respond differently to the same meal.

For this reason, our dieticians will help monitor your progress and show you what and how to check for at home, to see how your body responds to your new healthy way of eating.

This could include measuring your intake of certain food types at first and checking your blood sugar regularly before and after eating.

Winning the mind game.

Most importantly, eating differently is a mind game. This is because it requires you to form new habits.

At Diabetes West our dieticians will assess your readiness to change. We will look at the dynamics that are at play in your life, at work and at home.

We will consider your current health status, your levels of motivation and what you want and need to achieve.

We will then individualise a healthy eating plan just for you that will help you achieve and maintain your health goals in the long run.

This might not always be easy, but the results will definitely be worth it. And on the not so easy days you will always be able to count on the support of Diabetes West to keep you going. And of course to make it fun.
